Nature Sense Design helps homeowners make thoughtful decisions about residential landscapes and gardens. Local/on-site consultations and in-person design are available throughout Bergen County and nearby Northern New Jersey communities, including nearby Passaic, Essex, and Hudson County areas, plus nearby Rockland County, NY where practical. Farther away, remote landscape design is available throughout the Northeast for USDA Hardiness Zones 4a–7b.

Garden Consultation
A focused one-hour walk-through of your property to talk through what’s working, what isn’t, and what could make the space feel more complete. We’ll discuss plant choices, layout, problem areas, and practical next steps. After the consultation you will receive a written summary you can use yourself or with your gardener.
In-Person Garden Design
A custom landscape plan with digital renderings, plant selections, planting guidance, and clear next steps, tailored to your property, goals, and maintenance needs. Nature Sense Design creates the plan; you can implement it yourself or work with the landscaper of your choice.

Do I need to use a landscaper?+
No. Your plan is designed to give you flexibility. You can implement it yourself, work with your existing landscaper, or ask for local recommendations when available.
What if I don’t know what style or plants I want?+
That’s completely fine. Part of the design process is helping you identify what works for your property and what feels right for you. You do not need to arrive with a finished vision.
How long does the design process take?+
Most designs are delivered within approximately two weeks from the consultation or deposit, depending on scope.
Who will work on my landscaping project once I have a design?+
Once your design is complete, you’re free to implement it yourself or work with a landscaper of your choice. We can also recommend trusted local professionals if helpful.
Can you recommend where to buy plants and materials?+
Yes. We provide guidance on where to source plants and materials, including local nurseries and trusted online retailers. Read the garden blog for practical guidance.
A few important notes
A little clarity up front helps keep the design process simple and collaborative.
- Gardens are living, evolving spaces. Plant size, growth rate, bloom time, seasonal color, mature shape, density, and overall appearance naturally vary with weather, sunlight, soil, drainage, irrigation, maintenance, wildlife, disease, and pests.
- New landscapes typically need one to three growing seasons to fully establish. Transplant shock, slower growth, reduced flowering, and temporary seasonal stress are normal during that time and are not design defects.
- Nature Sense Design cannot guarantee plant survival, growth rate, flowering performance, or long-term plant health. A garden’s long-term success also depends on proper installation, watering, drainage, soil preparation, and ongoing maintenance.
